When is the next Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr (عيد الفطر, 'the Festival of Breaking the Fast') is the first of the two major Eids in the Islamic calendar. It falls on 1 Shawwal, the day immediately after Ramadan ends. The day of Eid begins with a special Eid prayer (Salat al-Eid), followed by family visits, gifts to children (eidiyyah), and special meals. Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for three days in most Muslim countries (the official public holiday is typically 1-3 Shawwal), though family gatherings often extend through the week.

How the date is officially determined

Two methods determine the start of Eid al-Fitr. The tabular calendar (used by this calculator) is a fixed astronomical formula that predicts the date in advance. Official moonsighting (used by Saudi Arabia via the Supreme Court, UAE, Egypt, and most Muslim-majority countries) confirms the start by sighting the Shawwal crescent on the night of the 29th of Ramadan. If the new crescent is sighted, Ramadan ends after 29 days and Eid begins the next day; if not, Ramadan continues to 30 days and Eid begins after that. The two methods agree most of the time but can differ by ±1 day. Saudi Arabia's announcement is binding for residents.

The three days of Eid celebration

Most Muslim countries observe Eid al-Fitr as a multi-day public holiday. The first day (1 Shawwal) is the most important - the Eid prayer takes place at sunrise, often in open-air prayer grounds (musalla) or mosques. Day 2 and Day 3 (2 and 3 Shawwal) typically involve family visits, social gatherings, and giving zakat al-fitr to those in need (if not already given before the Eid prayer). Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and most Gulf countries grant 3-4 days of public holiday. Some countries extend to a full week of celebration.

Why dates vary across countries

The same astronomical event (the new moon of Shawwal) is observed from different geographic locations. Countries that follow local moonsighting (Pakistan, India, Indonesia) may announce Eid 1-2 days after Saudi Arabia. Countries that follow Saudi Arabia's announcement (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt usually) celebrate on the same day. The differences are entirely about which moonsighting authority you follow - the underlying calendar math is the same. For binding religious observance, follow your country's official announcement.

Preparing for Eid al-Fitr

Most families begin Eid preparations during the last 10 days of Ramadan: buying new clothes (a tradition, especially for children), preparing special sweets (e.g. kahk, ma'amoul, baklava), arranging family visits and zakat al-fitr distribution, and confirming Eid prayer times at the local mosque. Many workplaces and schools close for 3-5 days. International airlines see peak travel as expatriates return home; book early. Frequently asked questions

The Gregorian date is shown in the hero card above - it's computed live from today using the standard Islamic tabular calendar. Eid al-Fitr falls on 1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. The actual official date in Saudi Arabia is announced by the Supreme Court based on moonsighting on the 29th of Ramadan, and may shift by ±1 day from the calculator's prediction.

Because the Hijri (lunar) year is about 354 days while the Gregorian (solar) year is 365.25 days. So Shawwal moves about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. Over a 33-year cycle, Eid al-Fitr rotates through every Gregorian month - from a winter Eid to a summer one and back.

Religiously, Eid is observed on 1 Shawwal - that's the single day of the special Eid prayer. The celebration traditionally extends through 3 days (1-3 Shawwal), with family visits and feasts. Public holidays vary by country: Saudi Arabia gives 3-4 days, the UAE 3 days, Egypt 3 days, Pakistan 3 days, Turkey 3 days. Some workplaces extend further for cultural reasons.

Most Muslim-majority countries rely on official moonsighting committees rather than tabular calculation. Saudi Arabia uses the Supreme Court's announcement on the 29th of Ramadan. Pakistan, India, and Indonesia often follow local moonsighting and may differ by 1 day. UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait typically align with Saudi Arabia. The tabular calendar we use is accurate to ±1 day. Always defer to your country's official announcement for binding religious observance.

Eid al-Fitr ('Festival of Breaking the Fast') falls on 1 Shawvval, the day after Ramadan ends. Eid al-Adha ('Festival of Sacrifice') falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj season - two months and ten days after Eid al-Fitr. Both are major Islamic festivals with their own significance: Eid al-Fitr celebrates the completion of Ramadan's fast; Eid al-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice and is the climactic celebration during Hajj.
