Zakat in Kuwait - authority and context
In Kuwait, the official body overseeing zakat is the Kuwait Zakat House (Bait Al-Zakat). Kuwait Zakat House (Bait Al-Zakat) is a public authority established by Amiri Decree No. 5 of 1982 - one of the oldest official zakat institutions in the GCC. It collects zakat voluntarily from individuals and corporations and distributes to the eight Quranic recipient categories both domestically and internationally. The Kuwaiti Dinar uses 3 decimal places (1 KWD = 1000 fils). The sharia rules (2.5% rate, 85g gold or 595g silver nisab, one lunar year hawl) are agreed across the Sunni schools of jurisprudence and the calculator above implements them in Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD).
Nisab in Kuwaiti Dinar - how it's calculated
The nisab is calculated dynamically based on today's gold and silver prices in Kuwaiti Dinar. Gold nisab = 85g x today's 24K gold price. Silver nisab = 595g x today's silver price. The calculator above uses the LESSER of the two thresholds (the more inclusive 'lesser-nisab' convention favored by modern scholars and most regional zakat institutions), since the silver nisab in KWD is usually lower than the gold nisab. Wealth above the nisab triggers zakat at 2.5%; below it, no zakat is due this year.
What wealth is zakatable
Zakatable wealth includes: cash and bank savings in KWD or any other currency (regardless of where held), gold and silver (jewelry, bullion, coins - the calculator follows the conservative inclusive default that includes everyday-worn jewelry), tradeable investments (stocks at market value, mutual funds, sukuk - those traded on the Kuwait stock exchange or any other), business inventory ready for sale, and sound debts (money owed to you that you reasonably expect to receive). Non-zakatable: your home, car, daily-use clothing, tools of trade, fixed business assets, and salary you're owed but haven't yet received.
Gold karat - converting to pure-gold equivalent
Zakat on gold is based on pure-gold content, not gross jewelry weight. So 100g of 22K gold contains 100 x 0.917 = 91.7g of pure gold; 100g of 18K contains 100 x 0.75 = 75g pure. Convert each piece to its pure-gold equivalent, sum them, and value at today's 24K spot price in KWD. The calculator handles karat conversion automatically. In Kuwait, 21K and 22K are the most common karats for jewelry; 18K is also widely sold.
Hawl, intention, and how to pay
The hawl (one full lunar year of continuous ownership above nisab) must elapse before zakat is due. Many Muslims fix their zakat date in Ramadan for spiritual reasons. Once due, zakat can be paid as money or in kind. In Kuwait, you can pay through Bait Al-Zakat Kuwait's online platform, which distributes the funds to the eight categories defined in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves seeking freedom, debtors, travelers in need, and those striving in God's path.
Frequently asked questions
The Kuwait Zakat House (Bait Al-Zakat, بيت الزكاة) is a public authority established by Amiri Decree No. 5 of 1982, making it one of the oldest official zakat institutions in the GCC. It collects zakat voluntarily from individuals and corporations in Kuwait and distributes the funds to the eight Quranic recipient categories both domestically and through international charitable programs. It also operates programs for orphans, the elderly, and emergency relief.
For individuals, zakat is voluntary - there is no mandatory state collection from personal wealth. For corporate entities, fully Kuwaiti/GCC-owned companies pay zakat at 1% of net annual profits (per Kuwait's Zakat Law No. 46 of 2006), distinct from the individual 2.5% rate. The calculator above is for individuals; corporate zakat follows separate accounting rules administered by the Ministry of Finance.
The nisab is the LESSER of: 85g of gold's value in KWD, or 595g of silver's value in KWD. As of 2026, the silver-based nisab is typically lower. The Kuwaiti Dinar is the highest-value currency in the world (1 KWD = ~$3.25), so absolute KWD figures look small. To calculate: take today's gold price (KWD per gram) x 85, take silver price x 595, use the lesser. The calculator above does this live.
Yes. Bait Al-Zakat operates a website (zakathouse.org.kw) with online payment capability and a network of branches across Kuwait. You can pay zakat for general distribution or designate it for a specific category (poor families, orphans, students, medical aid, debt relief, international relief, etc.). Receipts are issued and the institution publishes annual reports on collection and distribution.
Yes. Zakat applies to your total wealth regardless of where it is held - in Kuwait, transferred abroad, or held in foreign currencies. If you maintain savings in a home country (e.g., India, Egypt, Philippines), those count toward your zakatable wealth and you owe zakat on them. You can either pay zakat in KWD via Bait Al-Zakat in Kuwait or pay the equivalent in the foreign currency at the destination - sharia accepts both, provided the total reaches all eligible recipients.
