Zakat in Qatar - authority and context

In Qatar, the official body overseeing zakat is the Zakat Affairs Department, Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. Zakat is voluntary for individuals in Qatar (no mandatory state collection). The Awqaf Ministry's Zakat Fund manages a national zakat program where individuals can pay online and have funds distributed to eligible recipients. Zakat Al-Fitr 2026 was officially set by the Ministry at QR 15 per person. The sharia rules (2.5% rate, 85g gold or 595g silver nisab, one lunar year hawl) are agreed across the Sunni schools of jurisprudence and the calculator above implements them in Qatari Riyal (QAR).

Nisab in Qatari Riyal - how it's calculated

The nisab is calculated dynamically based on today's gold and silver prices in Qatari Riyal. Gold nisab = 85g x today's 24K gold price. Silver nisab = 595g x today's silver price. The calculator above uses the LESSER of the two thresholds (the more inclusive 'lesser-nisab' convention favored by modern scholars and most regional zakat institutions), since the silver nisab in QAR is usually lower than the gold nisab. Wealth above the nisab triggers zakat at 2.5%; below it, no zakat is due this year.

What wealth is zakatable

Zakatable wealth includes: cash and bank savings in QAR or any other currency (regardless of where held), gold and silver (jewelry, bullion, coins - the calculator follows the conservative inclusive default that includes everyday-worn jewelry), tradeable investments (stocks at market value, mutual funds, sukuk - those traded on the Qatar stock exchange or any other), business inventory ready for sale, and sound debts (money owed to you that you reasonably expect to receive). Non-zakatable: your home, car, daily-use clothing, tools of trade, fixed business assets, and salary you're owed but haven't yet received.

Gold karat - converting to pure-gold equivalent

Zakat on gold is based on pure-gold content, not gross jewelry weight. So 100g of 22K gold contains 100 x 0.917 = 91.7g of pure gold; 100g of 18K contains 100 x 0.75 = 75g pure. Convert each piece to its pure-gold equivalent, sum them, and value at today's 24K spot price in QAR. The calculator handles karat conversion automatically. In Qatar, 21K and 22K are the most common karats for jewelry; 18K is also widely sold.

Hawl, intention, and how to pay

The hawl (one full lunar year of continuous ownership above nisab) must elapse before zakat is due. Many Muslims fix their zakat date in Ramadan for spiritual reasons. Once due, zakat can be paid as money or in kind. In Qatar, you can pay through Qatar Awqaf Ministry's online platform, which distributes the funds to the eight categories defined in the Quran (9:60): the poor, the needy, zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, slaves seeking freedom, debtors, travelers in need, and those striving in God's path.

Frequently asked questions

The Zakat Affairs Department under the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs manages a national Zakat Fund. Zakat in Qatar is voluntary for individuals - no mandatory state collection. The Ministry's Zakat Fund accepts online payments and distributes funds to the eight Quranic recipient categories, both inside Qatar and through international charitable programs.

The nisab is the LESSER of: 85g of gold's value in QAR, or 595g of silver's value in QAR. As of February 2026, the silver-based nisab is approximately QAR 5,700, which is lower than the gold-based threshold. The calculator above computes both live based on the gold/silver prices you enter and uses the lesser of the two (the more inclusive 'lesser-nisab' convention).

Zakat Al-Fitr 2026 was officially set by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs at QR 15 per person. This figure is based on the Prophetic Sa'a (approximately 2.5 kg of the community's most common staple food), with the Department using the average price of rice as the primary benchmark. Zakat Al-Fitr is separate from Zakat Al-Mal (wealth zakat) which this calculator covers.

Yes. The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs operates digital zakat services including an updated Individual Zakat Calculator and a Corporate Zakat Calculator. You can pay zakat through the Ministry's online portal, which directs funds to the eight categories of eligible recipients defined in the Quran (9:60).

Qatar has no personal income tax, so the question of tax deductibility doesn't apply to individuals. Corporate entities pay either zakat (for fully Qatari/GCC-owned companies) or corporate income tax (for foreign-owned companies), and zakat paid satisfies the equivalent obligation under the General Tax Authority's framework.
